Grand Slam but Moving On!  Our last issue sent shortly after the reunion was entitled"Home Run" but that didn't settle well with some of you. Classmates wrote saying it should have been called "Grand Slam."  Thank you for your friendly chiding. You made us feel appreciated.

Amazingly, two months after "THE REUNION", the Committee is still hearing thank you's from those in attendance and from those who bought the Memory book.  Many of the emails and calls have been so heartfelt. A few of which have been included in this issue.

Obviously, those in attendance had a good time and the Committee was happy that the weather cooperated, the events came off as planned and you came!  Rumblings of a 55th are surfacing, although few can muster up the energy to even think about it. Still, keep in your thoughts...Colorado - 2015!

This newsletter will touch upon a series of things - a letter from the Chairman, information on the Shutterfly website of all the reunion pictures, our East High Class of 1960 website, the Memory Book, comments from you and the final list of those who had reservations.  Not everyone who made reservations was able to come, but most did and some classmates were able to come at the last minute.

The committee members who ran the various events are to be congratulated for their attention to detail while staying on budget!  Our thanks go to the attendees who made the numbers work and also those who contributed money to help with the expenses.  No decision has been made regarding the net, but options are being reviewed and carefully considered. We want to be fiscally responsible in everything we do just as we did throughout the planning.

A couple reminders:  First, a major part of the challenge of doing the reunion was keeping the database accurate.  The computer is wonderful, but only if the information is timely. The amount of time spent working on the database is impossible to estimate but it was major.  Your Chairwoman, Sheila Nasbarg Rudofsky, was driven with finding as many people as possible.  By all accounts, only a 100 or so out of the 900 + people we identified are still missing. Thus, a personal request.  If you have a change of address or email or know something that we need to know, please send in the information to Sandy Vines:sdvines@gmail.com

Second, when in doubt or if you have any questions, check the website.  It will stay up,  although the updates will not be as frequent.

Third, as your newsletter editor, I am retiring. It has been a most enjoyable year .  The newsletter was started in January, 2010 and I thank you for the nice comments that have come my way on many occasions.  Cynthia Riebeth will be our new editor.  As co-editor of the Memory Book, she did an excellent job on compiling the biographies and has experience with newsletters.  Exactly how and how often the newsletter will be sent has yet to be determined.

Finally on behalf of the entire committee, you are the best. There are no words to express how much it meant to have everyone here from near and far, to see you fully participate in the spirit of the events and be so supportive. We had a great time and by all indications, you did too.

                                                                         Your 50th Reunion Committee

Letter from the Chairwoman

The reunion is now a beautiful memory, and we can thank a phenomenal committee for their dedication to the 18-month project!  We really have to thank Jack Sheff, Class of 1956 for his guidance in finding our huge list of Missing Classmates, and the Class of '59 for "inventing the wheel" so that we were able to choose the perfect venues and avoid the pitfalls.  Iretta Jackson Bell and Cynthia Riebeth took the Memory Book to new heights, and Marty Carey Segelke and Sandy Vines were the backbones of our monthly meetings  --  what a team!

The computer made such a difference in locating many classmates, keeping in touch with them by way of the wonderful newsletters, and keeping our database up to date.  Richard Smith developed a website that is still being enjoyed by the Class of '60 as well as many others classes, and the reunion photos taken by Judy Judd Soden made the reunion come to life for many.  We also have to recognize the fact that with age comes the experience to tap into many more resources than in past years  --  we are so much more connected to our community, and there was always someone who knew where to find what we needed!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support and hard work  --  this has been a terrific journey!

PHOTOS

For your convenience, the East High 50th Reunion photos, taken at all three events by one of our 1960 classmates (and volunteer) Judy Judd Soden, are now available "online" at a special Shutterfly Gallery created for all of you to view and/or to purchase.
Just insert the following URL into your browser

                             http://easthigh50threunion.shutterfly.com

and you will be taken directly to the gallery.  You are also able to access the link from the class website.  Judy has included captions for each photo except for a few that she was not able to identify.  Feel free to send her an email (judyjsoden@yahoo.com) if you have  edits/corrections/questions.

If you choose the "option" at the gallery to view the photos as a "slide show," you will see the caption printed below each photo at the bottom of the screen.  Send her this file name if there are corrections to be made.  The cost of each 4" X 6" photo is only about 15 cents which is Shutterfly's individual base price.  We are not profiting from the purchase of these photos as we wanted you all to have FUN and enjoy this special trip through memory lane."
It is not necessary to sign up to view the photos at Shutterfly, but you will have to sign up to purchase photos, but there is no charge except the cost of the photos to do so.

                                                    VIDEO

Jeff, the videographer from Raines Video Productions worked throughout the reunion events to record as many classmates as possible.  A letter was sent out shortly after the reunion explaining the pricing and how the DVD's could be ordered. If you have ordered already, the video's should be coming soon. If you have any questions, please contact Richard Raines at rcrvp@aol.com or call 1-800-654-8277.

MEMORY BOOK

300 copies of the one hundred and thirty two page, quality, hard bound Memory book, "Memories are made of This 1960-2010" were sold.  What a treasure!  It was filled with photographs, 275 bio's and detailed information on a variety of subjects including East's history, a list of contributors, directory of classmates, names and pictures of those "In Memory", and other nuggets. One of the most popular sections was "Who is in my Zip?".  Classmates had no idea that another classmate lived close by.  We have ordered more as we sold out, but the cost of the book will increase for  the second printing. It will probably be $40-$42, but we are still negotiating. If you want a copy, please email Iretta at irettabell@msn.com and let her know you are interested. She will advise you of the cost and when you could expect to receive one. Any questions regarding the Memory Book, please contact Iretta.

A FEW of the COMMENTS

Roz McPhee Akins I have been reading the history of DenverEastHigh School by Richard Nelson.  I was surprised and interested to see that a contract for the new high school building, which was on Stout Streetbetween 19th and 20th Streets, after the ArapahoeSchool, was given to my grandfather CD McPhee and Co.  I had no idea he was involved in this. I enjoyed the reunion immensely and am enjoying learning about the history of East High. Thanks to you all for your work.

Jane Newhagen  Thank you all for creating such a memorable reunion event! It was a perfect re-introduction to Denver for this grad who hasn't been back since 1964. And to think I almost succumbed to faint heartedness and didn't come! In retrospect, I wouldn't have missed it for the world!

Mimi Garrison Figel (two days and a week after the reunion) maybe it's just me but i thought last weekend was much more fun than this weekend....

Jud Hart  I'm very happy I came to the reunion! You and "the crew" did a great job organizing so many moving parts! The next day, Sam Batey and I got together with John Caldwell - told him how much he (probably) would have enjoyed himself at Pinehurst CC.

Janet Carlisle  It was GRAND!  Thank you all for all of your work.  It was wonderful to get to see my first friends and to relive memories of my youth and to find out how amazing those friends were.  It was wonderful. You all deserve a medal for the effort that you made to pull this off for all of us.  You have created an amazing memory for all of us!  Thank you.

Pixie Cohen (A special thank you to Pixie who wrote the poem distributed Saturday evening) Can't believe the reunion was almost 2 weeks ago.  It was my first reunion and it was so wonderful.  You all did such a beautiful job with such attention to detail.   I thought the tour of the school and the talk was absolutely great... and we even got to go up into the Tower!!!   Had anyone ever done that while we were in high school? It was fun recognizing people without even having to read name tags!  Guess even though we have changed, some things are the same.

It must have been so much fun to work on the Reunion Committee and see everything come to fruition.   Just wanted to say thanks again for all your hard work.

Nancy Garthe Griesser  The reunion was superb in every way.  There's no adequate way to thank all of you for creating such meaningful opportunities for us.  It began with the extraordinary efforts that went into finding so many members of the Class of 1960!  That built a foundation for all that followed because it insured that each of us who attended would be able to visit with a significant number of classmates.  That was the initial and very powerful draw!

Next came the communications with us--the newsletters, the updates.  You kept us involved and we could see how the reunion attendance and participation was growing!  And you involved us!  As we prepared our own information for the memory book, we could feel the momentum of the upcoming reunion.  And our own reflections began...
And the communications continued.  As the details unfolded, we could begin to visualize the weekend.  The descriptions, the announced speakers, all contributed to our feeling a part of what was going on.

What an achievement and a treasure the memory books are!  (A bit of a step up from our decades-earlier, X-Acto knifed creation, eh?)  I'm so grateful to everyone who made the books happen!  The memory books speak volumes (pun intended) for the quality of the reunion weekend.

The actual reunion events themselves were magnificent--very thoughtfully planned and perfectly executed!!  Wow!!  You gave us so many wonderful opportunities to interact with one another--to renew relationships and to establish new ones with classmates we hadn't known well earlier.  I have so much follow-up to do!  The reunion will go on and on for me as I begin to catch back up with the many, many people I was able to connect with during the reunion weekend.

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you for the considerable time and effort each reunion committee member put into the reunion.  You gave the East High Class of 1960 an incredible gift and those of us who were privileged to experience the weekend will be forever grateful.

Gene Reddick  I want to thank you all so much for all the months of work you took on to host our East High 50 Year Reunion.  Each event was so much fun and well-organized!  It was so well done and it will truly be one of the main highlights of my life.

Donna Moffett Smith I had so much fun at the school on Saturday.  I will go to everything on the 55th!

THANK YOU... FOR YOUR  RESERVATION

50th Reunion Newsletter
           September 17, 2010  - Issue 14

WELCOME
 TO YOUR 50th Reunion
Big E at East

September 17  Less than a week to go!  This newsletter will review some last minute details. This week, our committee met for the last time... before the reunion. We are down to the last items and now eagerly await the arrival of the classmates, spouses and guests.  Our goals have been exceeded and those of you who can come will be rewarded with enjoyable events while seeing many old friends and classmates. This will be the last newsletter before the reunion. (After the reunion, the editor is leaving town... and taking a vacation!)  The website will still be active and have the most up to date information.

Some questions always come up.  Be sure and check the website and this newsletter for answers.  Two local contacts are listed below to use during the reunion.

The Reservation list has been updated.   If you have sent a reservation in and don't see your name, please contact our Treasurer, Iretta Jackson Bell immediately. She will contact you. Please do not send any more checks by mail.  If you can come, email Iretta and tell her,  but bring your check to the registration table. We need to know you have paid before issuing a name tag for the event.  At each event will be a "Who Is Here" list and a "Message" board.  We don't want anyone to miss someone they planned to see.

In this newsletter, there is information on activities in and around Denver plus a list of recommended restaurants in the Cherry Creek area.  Also, links to general websites that provide unlimited resources.

The Memory Book is outstanding!  We have had a sneak preview and are pleased with how it turned out.  Information for ordering, the mailing and book distribution at the reunion is included.  If you want to  order the CD from the 78 record which was produced in the senior year entitled "A Year to Remember - East High School 1959-1960" click on the link provided below.

A videographer from Richard Raines Video Productions will be here filming during the three events of the reunions.  The company will send information later on how to purchase a copy. For those who can't come... and those who do... and want a video of the happenings, it should be a great option. This company does many reunions throughout the United States and recently taped the 50th reunions for South and North High School's 50th  reunions. The cost will be $29.95 plus tax and shipping.

Our photographer, Judy Judd Soden, will be taking pictures throughout the reunion and will post her pictures to be viewed and/or purchased on the website Shutterfly. If you want to send reunion photos for the website, email them to Sandy sdvines@gmail.com and she will forward them to our Web Master, Richard Smith who will put them on our website.  We will have additional information links for all photography options.

We have been watching the forecasts very carefully.  As you know, Colorado's weather can be fickle. On September 17th, 2000, there was a major snowstorm with two feet of snow,  but we are happy to report the forecast looks good!  It will be a great fall weekend in Colorado. The prediction is for the low 80's during the day but cooler evenings, so be prepared.   It is going to be perfect. See you soon!

Denver Attractions

If you are coming from out of town (or have guests staying with you), there are many options to consider that might make your trip more enjoyable.  On Sunday afternoon, the Denver Broncos play Indianapolis and the Colorado Rockies are trying to give Coloradoans heart failure again as they have their September surge and a game with San Francisco. The fabulous King Tut exhibit (which started in Atlanta in 2009) is at the Denver Art Museum. The exhibit includes over 50 objects from the Egyptian King's tomb and has been well received.

You might go "antiquing" on Broadway, gaming in Black Hawk and Central City, take a tour of the Mint, Coors, Railroad Museum, or a nostalgic trip to Red Rocks (remember those concerts?).  The new Asian Tropics Exhibit at the Denver Zoo which will cover ten acres and be world renown is in construction now. The Botanical Gardens (south of East at 1005 York Street ) have just completed a major renovation, the parking is excellent and should be ablaze with color. The Henry Moore sculpture exhibit  has received an accolade of cheers and is exceptional. Have just a few hours? Hop the 16th Street Mall bus or walk or shop in Lodo (lower downtown Denver).

All of these things plus many more options make Denver what it is today. Thanks to Toby Grossman Beamguard who has put all of this information together including the following list of recommended restaurants in the Cherry Creek area. Here are a couple websites: www.visitDenver.com and www.Denver365.com  to peruse also.

East High School Class of 1960
Incredible Response! We're on a Roll
50th Reunion Newsletter
           August 20, 2010  - Issue 12

East High School

Dear   Richard :

AUGUST 20th    It has been ten days since the last newsletter and the city of Denver and all places north, south, east and west of here have responded!  Actually, the truth is that the reservations have been flowing in and  we are well over 300 for all the events - Friday night, Saturday noon and Saturday night.  We have some late arriving replies and will continue to accept responses for as long as we can, but you need to get your reservation in ASAP.  (See information at the end of the newsletter.) The Memory book is selling well too.  We have over 230 orders at this time.

The list under Reservations is of those who have responded and checks were added to our reservation list as of Wednesday, August 18th.  If you have sent a reservation  and don't see your name yet, be patient. Our Treasurer, Iretta Jackson Bell does send an email acknowledgement when she receives the reservation.

For information about the reunion, please visit the website.  It lists the events and activities. As we get closer, we will update you with more details.

Regarding the pictures posted to the website, they are wonderful.  Classmates have sent in submissions to Sandy Vines  and Richard Smith has posted them to the website. Check out PHOTOS. Remember these are less formal and can include families and everyone is invited to submit one.  Thank you to all who have participated.  Also, a note regarding our last newsletter.  In the introduction paragraph, there were two photos at East. Dick Friesen
submitted these and some other outstanding pictures for the website and they are posted in the  BACK IN THE DAY section. For those classmates coming to the Saturday event at the school, the images will become a reality... again.  The school is very excited to welcome us at our event "Rock Around the Clock". Remember, we have various activities planned at the school, but bring your lawn chairs for some good relaxed conversations.  If you are not sure of who you are talking with at ANY of the events, there will be large name tags!

Included today is a new offering for you to consider.  The 78 record that was produced in the Senior year entitled " A Year to Remember - East High School 1959-1960" has been made into a quality CD.  All the information is below and what a gem it is.  You will want to add this to your memorabilia as those 78 records aren't very viable any more, but this CD is!

For those who are unable to come (and for those who do come) there will be another option for you to view all the activities.  Richard Raines of Video Productions, Portland, OR  will film our events and do interviews of classmates.  Information will be sent after the reunion as to how you can purchase a copy.  The DVD will comprise of two discs and cost $29.95 plus tax and shipping.   If you can't be here, this will definitely be the next best thing.  Also, our professional photographer, Judy Judd Soden, will be taking pictures at the events which we will post on the website afterwards.

A reminder again regarding the Memory Book.  It will be hardbound and of the best quality.  Our editor, Cynthia Riebeth and Iretta Jackson Bell and Sandy Vines have designed and produced a real keepsake.  You, the classmates, are the stars and have provided the bio's and pictures that are amazing, interesting and powerful to read. What a diversified class. This book is a true treasure. Use the reply card below to order if you haven't already.  We will not have but a few extra to sell at the reunion, so don't miss out.

Our event is only a month away and the committee is fine tuning the details.  Our goals for participation were high and we have exceeded our expectations. We couldn't be happier .  All the work is worth it and we thank you for the nice comments received from so many people.  Recently,  a classmate commented that she was very excited for the reunion and "the website was fantastic". We are getting stories of people who have reconnected with friends after all these many years and it is heartwarming. Think of all the stories there will be after the reunion!  We can't wait to see you.

Respect the Senior

Fifty years is a long time and perhaps a few things have changed, but not all.  We wouldn't want to suggest that anyone would get out of control at the reunion, but perhaps the following is worth viewing in case there are any moments of lapse. Of course, no one from the Class of 1960 is featured.  Enjoy and we look forward to seeing you in Denver in September!

East High School Class of 1960
Reservation Deadline - Coming Up!         50th Reunion Newsletter
           August 2, 2010- Issue 10

Dear Richard,

East High School

AUGUST   has arrived in all its glory.  Sunday was Colorado's 134th birthday.  It entered the Union on August 1, 1876 as the 38th state.  August is significant to the planning committee for two reasons:  1) It means next month is our reunion - September 24th and 25th and 2)  Reservations are due August 15th.  After lots of work and planning for over a year, we will finally be able to know all the people who will be here and we are excited to say the least!

The response is excellent.  You'll find the names of those who have sent in reservations as of July 26th. As a reminder,  at the very end of every newsletter is a copy of the reply card that you can print off and send in.  Remember, IF you need more details on any aspect of the reunion, please check the website or contact any of the people listed below with questions.

www.EastHigh60.com

On the Sunday Morning program on CBS yesterday, there was a segment on the Do-Wop songs.  Talk about memory lane..."Good Night Sweetheart", "Rocking Robin", "Going Out of My Head", etc.    As one person commented, these songs of the 1950's and 60's were so popular,  because they were short and you could understand the words.  Also, it was the first time teenagers had their own music.  Following this theme, our Memory Book co-editor, Cynthia Riebeth  has written a hilarious accounting of her work entitled  a "Diary of a "Mad" Memory Book Editor".  Don't miss reading it...and don't miss out on ordering a copy of the Memory Book.  Over 265 classmates are featured and for those waiting until the reunion, there will be only a limited number available.  Order ahead and you will be assured of your copy.

For our East history buffs, there are a few facts about the old school. Finally as  we strive to communicate, there is information on the Saturday event at East and news regarding the CD that was produced from the "78" record our senior year.  Read on........and enjoy but whatever, get your reservation in as the deadline is upon us!  THANK YOU!

Your Reunion Committee

Diary of a "Mad" Memory Book Editor
A True Story of Volunteerism and   Martyrdom

Working as Editor of bios and photos for the EHS 50th Reunion Memory Book has been an unforgettable experience.  Since it involves many of you, I want to impart to you a behind-the-scenes synopsis of this odyssey.  I do this partly because I hope to elicit your understanding and empathy in the unlikely event anything goes amiss-and also to plead for a little sympathy--"Ain't That a Shame" (Fats Domino)

(NOTE:  This is my First Reunion-as a volunteer.  I was totally unprepared for the amount of time and dedication organizing an event like this requires.  My fellow committee members, and the others who have been doing this for the last fifty years are to be commended.  I am really overwhelmed and grateful for their devotion and time commitment).

Anyway, back to my story.  The Siege lasted approx.:  3 months (Apr. 23-Jul. 23), or 91 days, 7 days / 42 (about) hours per week.  It was Total Immersion.  It was truly--"Crazy" (Patsy Cline).

February 11, 2010:  A former classmate (aka The Recruiter) told me of the dire need for help with the Memory Book, and I offered my assistance.  With average computer skills and minimal photo-editing experience, I was "hired"on the spot.  But, you know-"Everybody's Somebody's Fool" (Connie Francis).

One morning in April:  Launch Day--the beginning of my indoctrination.  I was told, "It's really very easy-just do this..." She said-- "That's All You Gotta Do" (Brenda Lee).

April 23:  Received my first bios and photos.  My editing started in full force-paring down bios and editing the photos to downsize, upsize, scan, clarify, color balance, download, save, format and convert to JPEG and sending lots of e-mails.  I'm lost and thinking-"Please Help Me, I'm Fallin" (Hank Locklin)

April 23-June 14:  Processed 83 bio/photo submissions into Word's Table template.  Things were going smoothly, looking good.  So I thought-- "(What A) Wonderful World" (Sam Cooke).

June 14:  Publisher said that I needed to change from Word's Table template to Excel so that it would merge with their program.  It was necessary to re-edit and re-enter my 83 completed bios/photos into the new template.  So late in the process-"Why" (Frankie Avalon)?  Only I could see "The Tracks of My Tears" (Smokey Robinson), but I had to finish this-"It's Now or Never" (Elvis Presley).

June 15-June 30:  Re-entered all 83 people into new template.  Submissions were gushing into my email.  For every one I processed, three more arrived.  It reminded me (still does) of the BP oil leak exploding into the sea.  I really was-"Shakin' All Over" (Johnny Kid).

July1-July 8:  Today, 7/1 is Deadline Day; but entries are still coming.  I began to question if I could process all of them by printer's deadline.  Please-"Release Me" (Englebert Humperdinck).  Woke up July 6th, brushed teeth, fed kitties, put on some eye-lifting serum and reported to my computer.  Turned on computer and was faced with only a blank screen.  It truly was-"So Sad" (Everly Brothers). The hard drive crashed, was replaced and returned to me on July 8.  All data was recovered.  However, when I opened my email, 141 EHS related messages appeared.  Gulp!

July 8-July 22:  Processed, edited, entered, emailed, re-entered, reviewed, proofed, and re-reviewed.

July 23:  Glory!  Glory!  It's over!  Took final (Excel) template to publisher for printing.  What a great feeling.  I am so thankful for--"This Magic Moment" (Drifters).

HIGHLIGHTS/STATISTICS (Of 265 Entries)

  1. Bios:  EHS Newsletters specified they be 150 words, however--longest Bio-1261 words, shortest Bio-14 words. Only about half did not exceed 150 words. Most difficult (had to re-type) formats:  numbered lists, all caps, staggered sentences, one continuous horizontal line, non-downloadable.
  2. Submissions (bio and photo):  Number of steps necessary to process Ideal Submission (150 words, photo in JPEG format & contact permission included)----21. Number of Ideal Submissions----6.  Remaining 259 took 22-50 (or so) steps.
  3. E-Mails:  Approximate total of EHS e-mails received/sent to process Memory Book bios/photos-over 2000.  Most number of e-mails used to process an entry in its entirety-----19.
  4. Words:  Longest word used-----15 letters.  A bio of 150,  15-letter words would be 30 lines long.
  5. Most bizarre request:  my lips are sealed.

EPILOGUE:  The class of 1960 was exceptional, and I am fortunate to have been part of it.  Thanks to all of you who submitted entries for the Memory Book.  It will be an outstanding book, and I truly am happy and proud that I was "hired" to be Editor of your biographies and photos.

 Cynthia Riebeth

P.S.--"Save the Last Dance for Me"(The Drifters)

Please Note:  As stated above, there will only be a limited number of copies available for purchase at the reunion.  You need to order ahead of time, so you won't be disappointed.  If you haven't ordered one yet,  use the reply card below and send a check made out to  East High Class of 1960, 1650 Fillmore Street, Unit 1607, Denver, CO 80206 . $30 if picked up at the reunion and $37 if mailed.  (We are currently researching and hoping we might be able to mail to everyone prior to the reunion, but do not have a definite answer yet.)

DEADLINE for Reservations and Ordering of the Memory Book is August 15th.

THE WEBSITE ROCKS!

The website www.easthigh60.com continues to expand.  In the section, BACK IN THE DAY, there are exceptional photographs inside East, four old SPOTLIGHTS which were transferred into PDF files and one model and other good things to see. Under the PHOTO section, our Web Guy has put up the more recent pictures of classmates, their families, interests etc.  By the looks of things, this getting older isn't all that bad.

If you haven't sent a picture, do and if you have and it isn't up yet, no fear.  We are trying to post once a week.  Also, please understand if there is something amiss with your picture, it happens. Sometimes cyber space does some weird things and we are sorry.  The pictures may have been sent correctly, but the gremlins did their thing.  Let us know if something is wrong and we will get it corrected as soon as possible.

Remember, the website has links to old NEWSLETTERS if you missed one.  There is a MEMORIAL list, MISSING ANGELS list ( 86% of the people identified), the REUNION EVENTS, names of COMMITTEE members, a blurb on the MEMORY BOOK (deadline is past - sorry but you can still order)  and other REUNION LINKS  In fact under Reunion Links, there are the Class of 1958 and the Class of 1959 listed.  Great viewing.

This reunion committee has searched high and low for people.  In fact, one person exclaimed, "How in the world did you find me?"  The committee's goal was to reach as many classmates as possible in some way or another. Recently, Marla and Skip Kauerz have joined the efforts and worked hard to further the cause.  If you know of anyone that isn't receiving our information or hasn't been contacted either by phone or email, please let us know.  We are an all-inclusive, open invitation - please come and join in the fun, 50th reunion committee!

OTHER NEWS of INTEREST

Saturday's event at East High is totally casual. Chairmen Ted Simon and Alan Davis say come be comfortable and enjoy!  For anyone at the 40th reunion, it will be similar to the picnic where people ate and talked, toured a bit and talked some more.  Plan now if you are attending to bring a lawn chair that day or even an extra one if possible for those coming from out of town.  If the weather is bad, we will move inside to the cafeteria, but we are hoping for a wonderful fall day on the Esplanade.  In fact, here is a new fact......East's address is no longer on Detroit street!  It is now

1600 City Park Esplanade
Denver, CO  80206
(720) 423-8300

Included in the Saturday event will be "Pasquali" type wagons for food selections, tours of the school and the Tower. You'll see the restoration work that was completed this summer on the front steps and for upgrades of the Esplanade. A bond issue was passed and a successful fundraiser for East was held to provide monies for this project.

Finally, you may remember (or still have) the "78" record that was made during our Senior year entitled "A Year To Remember".  It includes recordings from the Pep Assembly, Howdy Day, Inauguration Assembly, Coaches Weimar and Browning, Christmas Assembly, Code Assembly, a Basketball game, All School Show, Hastings College Quartet, Concert Band and Orchestra.  Joan Harcourt McWilliams uncovered it in a recent move and had it copied into a CD with a beautiful picture of East on the cover and index.  All in a nice case. Plans are in the works to have it available at a very reasonable cost to those who want to order one. The details will be in the next newsletter.

A Brief History of East High
A Descendant of Denver's First School

1859 A leaky, mud-roofed, one-room log cabin schoolhouse called The Union School opened near the corner of 12th and Black. The one teacher was O.J. Goldrick, and thirteen children attended. Families arriving by wagon train considered the existence of the Union School a great selling point to settle in West Denver.  The next year it moved to 14th and Market.  Another teacher was hired.

1862 School District One was created, and the first school board was elected for East Denver Schools.

1873 -75 Arapahoe School (cost $51,695) opened on Arapahoe Street between 17th and 18th. A large bell called the students to class and it was relocated to the south lawn at the present day East. The building was used for only nine years and then sold.  James H. Baker arrived to be the first principal of the High School which is considred the beginning of East High School.

1877 Thirty students, seven of them seniors, voted for school colors. They selected carmine and white (carmine was the only colored ink available at the time). Later, the carmine was shortened to red.

1889 "Old East," on Stout (between 19th and 20th)  is completed at a cost of $322,685.  It would accomodate 700 students.

The school featured a gracious flight of stairs leading to the entrance, which was notable for its sculpture of the face of a young girl.

School architect Robert S. Roeschlaub and the school board decided to use a local childhood beauty instead of a Greek face to symbolize the school's "dedication to youth." The sculptor was Preston Powers, famous for his statue of the Indian on the grounds of the state capitol. Five thousand little girls across the city were visited as part of a campaign to find the model for the face. Six-year-old Ella Catherine Matty was selected.

The statue was so lovely that those who saw it said that the artist could not have chosen a better model that he been able to have an angel pose. The result of this observation was that all East High students since have been called Angels. When "Old East" was demolished in 1925, the keystone was removed and placed in the rock garden at the "New East." A replica of the original "East Angel" is located on the second floor of the school.

1893 As East became more crowded, Manual High School was buit for students who wanted to take up one of the trades.

1925 East High opened on its present site.  The cost of construction was $1,470,000. The school was built as part of a citywide effort to modernize and beautify public buildings, streets and parts called the "City Beautiful" campaign.

The architect was Denver native George Hebard Williamson, an 1893 graduate of the "old" East High. He won national recognition for his design of the "new" East, which was considered a model for modern and efficient school facilities as well as an aesthetic contribution to the surrounding community.

The architectural style of the building is known as Jacobean. The style is associated with the early 17th century British halls of learning, as well as the
American colonial period. The most famous example of this style is Philadelphia's Independence Hall, the site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The tower section of East is reminiscent of this important national monument.

The most visible feature of the East High building is its clock tower. At its highest point, the East Tower is 162 feet high and is visible from over a mile away. The clock weighs over a ton and each of its faces is nine feet wide.

The massive four-story exterior of East High spans 417 feet at its front face. It is constructed of mottled red brick with light terra cotta decorative trim Of particular note is the emphasis on extensive window treatments, which were designed to provide maximum light to the students inside.

The auditorium was originally designed with pale amber windows on either side, which were boarded over due to fire regulations in the 1950s. It was considered state of the art in its lighting and sound systems in the 1930s, and incorporated space for organ pipes that were never installed.

The third floor library is decorated in original gray oak woodwork and illuminated Elizabethan ceiling. The historic Marco Polo mural was painted by artist Hugh Weller during the Great Depression of the 1930s, as part of federal New Deal public work programs.

In early 1991, the East High building was declared an official Denver Historic Landmark by the Denver Landmark Commission and the Denver City Council, with the enthusiastic support of the Denver School Board and the East community of alumni, friends, students, parents, and staff.

East High School Class of 1960
Great Response - Keep it Coming!
 50th Reunion Newsletter

           July 19, 2010- Issue 9

Dear Richard,

Web Logo

July 19th...
thank you to everyone who submitted their Memory Book bio/picture.  We had a huge response and that was exciting.  The book is going to press and will be ready by the reunion.

Today, we are asking more help......we need pictures for the website and
 remember
RESERVATIONS...are due AUGUST 15th!

Now is the time to get those replies in.  We are very pleased by the response so far... yet each day that brings a new reservation only sweetens the pot for all!  The committee has worked for over a year to get ready for this September 24th and 25th reunion.  It is hard to imagine that it is only two months away.  Remember, If you need more details on any aspect of the reunion, please check the website or contact any of the people listed at the end of the newsletter with questions:
www.easthigh60.com

When we get questions or comments from people about coming to the reunion, we have moments of elation and thoughts of sadness.  High school was not a good time for everyone...there were the highs and lows and discovery of who we were and what we weren't.  50 years later, the stories are incredibly poignant.  Some of our classmates will not have the choice to be present and many whose lives were cut short.  Everyone can identify with that time when we were on a high one day and floundering around another.  Ask any teenager today and they would say they understand.  We didn't worry about guns or drugs.  Still, we had worries but 50 years later, those have come to past.  This celebration is one of realizing our education was excellent, the teachers did a wonderful job,  relationships and friendships were forged and it was a time in our lives like no other.   Our reunion celebrates so many things.  It is going to be fun,  festive and enjoyable.  We hope that you will be here!

MEMORY  BOOK

What a project!  Iretta Jackson Bell is coordinating the book and Cynthia Riebeth has been working hours on end getting all the pictures and bio's that were submitted in place.  THANK YOU for those who contributed.  In the next newsletter, Cynthia will write a bit about her experience.  It has been both interesting to receive the histories of classmates over the last fifty years, but also very tedious and time consuming to edit the information into the format of the book.

Please note...there will only be a limited number of extra copies available at the reunion.  Everyone who orders ahead will either receive his/her copy at the reunion or it will be sent afterwards. For those coming, it will be a great boon for identifying classmates. If you haven't ordered one yet,  use the reply card below and send a check made out to  East High Class of 1960, 1650 Fillmore Street, Unit 1607, Denver, CO 80206 . $30 if picked up at the reunion and $37 if mailedDEADLINE for both reservations and ordering of the book is August 15th.

Some classmates who sent their reservations in early may not remember if they ordered a book (we understand) just email Iretta, irettabell@msn.com and she will confirm if you ordered one.  Don't miss out on this special feature of the reunion. It is absolutely fascinating to learn of the places and interests and happenings of classmates. What a diversified student group with a bevy of experiences!

CHECK OUT THE EXPANDED WEBSITE!

If you haven't visited the website recently, www.easthigh60.com you are missing out!  It continues to get better and better.  Tom Markley has located four old SPOTLIGHTS and transferred them into PDF files that you can view online. These are the November 19,1959, December 17, 1959, March 10,1960 and May 21, 1960 editions.  What fun!  They are under the tab BACK IN THE DAY!  Thanks, Tom.

Also,we want pictures of you, your family, interests whatever!  In the PHOTO gallery, we have such pictures as Alan Davis and Ann Kennedy Sullivan with their precious grandchildren, Dr. Skip Jacques in a cutting horse competition, Sheila Nasbarg Rudofsky and family, Gerry Dahl and Steve Brown who obviously are working hard piloting their boats (who said getting older was a drag?), Rene Gash, Helen Riley Duran, Linda Campbell James, and Carolyn McCusker Wold sent in wonderful pictures. You'll see Tom Markley and his daughter and the 1972 Pontiac LeMans Sport Convertible that he restored. Get your photos in! Upload them to Sandy Vines, sdvines@gmail.com and she will photoshop them, add your name and Richard Smith, our Web Editor will post.

The website has links to old NEWSLETTERS if you missed one.  There is a MEMORIAL list, MISSING ANGELS list (we are getting closer to finding almost everyone, but still need some help), the REUNION EVENTS and COMMITTEE members are listed, a blurb on the MEMORY BOOK and other REUNION LINKS you may want to check out.

This reunion is all inclusive.  Although only 861 were listed in the May brochure of those graduating in the Class of 1960, we have identified over 976 who may have graduated later in the summer or want to be included and feel a part of this class. Some people would say we have added more work in trying to find everyone but we say, we are happy to connect, reconnect and find as many people as possible.  We want everyone to come that can or wants to be here!

                          COMMENTS AND MEMORIES OF EAST
 by Tom Markley
Class of 1960

No matter what you did, each one has a story... some more complex than others
Twenty-three memories that immediately come to mind of my days at East High:

1. Daily competition with Dave George over who could first answer Dr. Morris' question in Geometry class.

2. Hearing the Grand Canyon Suite and Finlandia for my initial exposure to music besides rock and roll, and loving them.

3. While conducting calisthenics in gym, Coach Weimer asked me what hand I used to wipe myself, I told him, and he said most use TP.

4. Having fun playing on Coach Coleman's Sophomore baseball team, and being part of a team of nice guys.

5. Heading west on Colfax at lunchtime to get the great glazed twists at the bakery a block from East.

6. Being shy around girls and focusing on sports, working so I could go to college, and fun with the guys.

7. Cruising the White Spot on weekend nights in my 1953 Ford convertible, and laying rubber as I left.

8. Brought to the Asst. Principal's (Mr. Beardshear's?) office for selling M-80's bought in Lakewood, being told the Denver Fire Chief was going to talk to my folks, telling my folks that evening, and then finding out my folks were never contacted.

9.  Being referred to as "Big Tom" by some.

10. Having the College Counselor at East telling me I would have to take "Dumb-Bell English" at CU during the summer after graduation or I'd never make it through college.  I didn't, I did make it and, ironically, I became known for my expertise in catching grammatical errors and misspellings in various technical manuals and documentation which were to be used by customers.

11. Taking extra math during the summer (Algebra 3?) because of my fascination/love of math.

12. Seeing Coach Weimer and DiTolla selling tickets at the Mile High Kennel Club during the summers.

13. Being around a lot of nice classmates who knew my family had limited funds, but they didn't care.

14. Going to school with a couple of black classmates for the first time, and I didn't care.

15. Having a popular girl, who I think is coming to the reunion, who said "Hi" to me when walking home.

16. Having the Hinton's, either one, lay on top of me in Wrestling so that I couldn't move and that, plus running the stairs, helped me decide wrestling was not my cup of tea.

17. Seeing Coach Pat Panek get mad because my doctor told my folks I shouldn't play football or my bad knees could end up being locked for life.  [I ended up playing sandlot ("pick-up") games instead.]

18. Lining up at Continental Divide Raceways (CDR) at 2:00 am on a Saturday with Hezlep, Hoery, and Miller to watch Hezlep's "stock" Chevy station wagon win trophies.

19.  Seeing some of the classmates cruise the Esplanade with their new Corvettes.

20.  Learning there are "Soches" (spelling?) and "Hoods" groups when I got to East.

21. Being a nerd who loved being in the Chess Club with guys so much smarter than I.

22. Loving rock and roll and now surprising myself that I still remember many of the lyrics.

23. Not paying attention to what was going on in a country called Viet Nam, which changed when I got to CSU.

Still, deadlines are looming.   July 1st the Memory Book information is due (just a little over three weeks)  thus, we need your information/picture as soon as possible.  Also, we are putting out a call for all present (and former) musicians that might be interested in participating in our Saturday noon jam session at East.  Letters from the coordinators of these projects plus an updated list of reservations are included in newsletter.  Finally, there is a very poignant story received just a few days ago from a former classmate.

If you need more details on any aspect of the reunion, please check the website www.easthigh60.com or contact any of the people listed below with questions. If you haven't received your invitation by now, let us know.

This reunion is the father (or grandfather) of all. 50 years of anything is a big deal and this event will match the Colorado mountains. Send in your information for the Memory Book and make your reservation today. Plan to be a part of this momentous event!

"MEMORIES" Book

June 6, 2010
HOWDY ANGELS

Isn't it "neat" that we are about to celebrate 50 years since our graduation in 1960?

You probably know by now that many special parties are being planned for the commemoration of this event on the weekend of September 24-25.  Food, music, revelry is to be shared by all; but most significant will be reconnecting with our former classmates and discovering what they've been doing this past half century.

We need your help, however-so that we can even prolong these great memories after the parties are over.  We are producing a Memory Book that will contain our 1960 Angelus photos and, with your help, current photos of each classmate along with information on what has been happening in our lives these past fifty years or just recollections of their times at East High.  This will be a high quality book with a hardcover (glue bound).  What will make it top notch is an inclusion of people's stories or thoughts, and we need to get these from you.  Thank you to all of you who have already submitted this information.

Some excerpts from the "bios" we have already received:

"Attended CSU for two years, served in the Air Force for four years, hired on with IBM in 1966.... and retired in 1998".

"I have many fond memories of my East High years which began at Ashley Elementary, then Smiley Jr. High and followed by Colorado State Univ."

"I practiced public accounting for 30+ years...I have 2 sons, 2 stepdaughters and 2 granddaughters".

"My wife and I still live full time in Wisconsin.  We have three children...My hobbies include gemology, hunting, fishing and dog training."

"I appreciate the excellent education we received and the teachers who formed us."

"I drove a '52 Olds hardtop with blue leather with the Strollers...what a hot car!  We beat up the "hot" fords and mercs on Colfax and the Boulder 'pike.  I remember the Back-hall clique."

Or just-----

"Best wishes to everyone in my class.  What a privilege it was to grow up in beautiful Denver and attend East High School".

PLEASE SEND ME COMMENTS, ANECDOTES, MEMORIES, JOB OR SCHOOL HISTORY OR JUST RANDOM THOUGHTS.  WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.  PLEASE.  We want to honor such a wonderful group of people with a wonderful book.

TO DO LIST

1.  Write your comments/bio (approximately 150 words or less).  Go to "Tools" and select "Word Count" in order to determine the length of your entry.  Please know that if your word count is over 150 and/or does not fit into our specified template space (e.g. use of many long words), we reserve the right to edit your information to the best of our ability.

  1. Scan or copy and paste a current photo to your e-mail.
  2. Let me know (yes or no) if we have your permission to print your address, phone and e-mail.
  3. Send the above to me at cynrieb@gmail.com.  Printing DEADLINE:  Must be received by July 1st

Thanks for listening.  Looking forward to hearing from you.

CALLING.... ALL MUSICIANS

I am trying to see if there is any interest in having a jam session for those in our class (or spouses) who are still active with their musical instruments.  The idea is to set up on the front steps at East or inside the main entrance, depending on the weather, before or during our Saturday morning/afternoon event "Rock Around the Clock".  It would be great to have anyone who would like to join us and sit in for a few tunes.  I can have a rhythm section and a PA system available from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.  For those of you who are coming from out of town and don't want to bring your own instrument, I can provide some instruments for you to use (flute, clarinet, alto and tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar and bass) if I know well in advance.

My thought was to play some "old standards" that we are all familiar with and let each of you submit a list of 4 or 5 tunes that you'd like to play, so that our rhythm section and the other players can brush up on the melodies and chord changes.

If you have any interest, suggestions or questions, please contact me by email at adavis3398@aol.com

Looking forward to hearing from you!

                                          STORIES

No matter what you did, each one has a story... some more complex than others but every one with value.  The Memory Book being compiled will capture these life highlights and as requested above, your story or message is wanted in whatever way you chose to write.

Growing up in Denver or attending East had different meanings for each one of us.  All experiences were valuable in forming the individuals we are today.  After publishing our "Missing" list in a former issue of this newsletter, the committee received this email. It is shared demonstrating one's perspective of attending East and the impact it had on his life.

On Thu, Jun 3, 2010 at 9:49 AM, the following was received.........

Hi,  I happened across this list of Missing Angels and wanted to let you know that I am here, alive and well. Actually, I quit school at East, only to return to school at East and finish with the class of 62'

I had messed around for my first bit of time at East, and was failing.  However, thanks to Jack Beardshear, the VP at the time, I was allowed to return and finish. I also should mention that even then, upon my return, I would not have been as successful as I was if it had not been for the music program at East. So I am a very strong supporter of the arts in the schools.

Later I went on to graduate from The University of Washington, and received a Master's Degree from the University of Oregon. Of all the things I might have chosen to do, especially after all my difficulty getting through high school, I became a teacher.

In 1965 I moved to Portland, Oregon and other than my time at the University of Washington in Seattle have lived in the Portland area every since. I have been married 42 years.  Besides teaching, my wife and I owned and operated a Retail store that sold bicycle for 25 years. When we retired, we closed that business.

After 30 years of teaching elementary school, I retired, and for the last 9 years have split my time between substitute teaching and traveling as much as possible.

I have a daughter and three grandchildren, ages 20, 18, and 15.  The two oldest graduated as Valedictorians of their high school, and both will be attending the University of Southern California on scholarships, where the oldest is will be a junior, and the other a freshman.

I hope this information helps you as you try to locate the Missing Angels.

Sincerely,

Paul Schmoll

 50th Reunion Celebration

             May 21,2010 - Issue 6

Dear Richard,

The Invitations Are Out!

Welcome to all!  The invitations were mailed Friday, May 14th and hopefully you have one by now. If you have not received your invite within the week, please let us know!  We tried hard to have the names and addresses correct, but given our age, abilities on the computer, the mobility of classmates, coordination of lists, number of changes, and magnitude of the project (over 550 sent),  we know there were some mistakes. Let us know of any corrections as soon as possible. Sandy Vines sdvines@gmail.com, our Secretary, who never sleeps and still has a real other job, is bound and determined to keep the database as accurate as possible.

This is the sixth newsletter regarding the planning and growing excitement regarding the 50 year reunion of East High Class of 1960. The committee began meeting over a year ago and it is hard to believe there are only four months remaining before the celebration begins.  Do us a huge favor and get your reservations and Memory Book information in as soon as it is possible. Although we can take general reservations until August 15th, the Memory Book information and pictures must be in by July 1st in order to have the book ready for our reunion.

The website www.easthigh60.com is being updated regularly. Tabs include Missing Angels, Memorial, Reunion links, past Newsletters, Reunion Committee members, and photos. There is a list under the Events tab of people who have RSVP'd and that will be changing more often as reservations are coming in.

Our  events continue to evolve......just getting better and better! These include the Friday evening's party "Yakety Yak" which is the kickoff. (We are aware that you want to be able to talk, hear and be able to move around to see people.) On Saturday, it is our chance to "Rock around the Clock" and tour East and the Clock Tower Musuem.  Richard Nelson, author of the book, "Flights of Angels" - a history of Denver East 1874-2004 which is highlighted below will be on hand for questions and tours. Copies of his book are available for purchase. There are plans in the works.....if feasible...to have a little "jamming" session that day on the steps (inside or out depending on the weather) by our own classmate, musician Alan Davis and others who might be willing to participate. Since we are fully aware that we are seniors although only in body but not minds, plans are to have some down time - relaxing, touring of your choice, shopping etc. in the afternoon before the finale,Let the Good Times Roll on Saturday evening. Each event has been planned with care and consideration and should combine for one special reunion weekend. Plan to be at this fun, festive and fantastic celebration made only better by those who attend!

                                                               Your Reunion Committee

"Memories" Book

The "Memories" hardback book is being compiled and your part, your information, is needed ASAP. Plans are to include your name, new and old photos as available, and a paragraph of information you submit. Histories will be limited to around 150 words. We want every classmate in the book whether you attend or purchase the book. If you have a current photo that can be sent digitally, all the better, but if not, use the reservation reply envelope or an envelope of your choosing. Everyone spread out in so many directions (as evidenced by the addresses) and had such a variety of experiences that it will be combined to be an interesting history. The book will cost $30.00 to be delivered at the reunion or $37.00 if mailed. You do not have to purchase a book to submit your information.  Remember the cutoff date:  July 1st  Also, make sure you include your first, last and maiden names.  Many Thanks.

Attractions - Denver Style

In the last issue, we mentioned many possible attractions that might be of interest if you have some time before or after the reunion. Check out these websites:  www.visitDenver.com and www.Denver365.com for possibilities. Please note that the King Tut Exhibit will be at the Denver Art Museum not the Museum of Nature and Science.  Formerly the Natural History Museum, it will open a new Amazon River exhibit  on September 24th.
Lodging

History Notes

One of the oddest things in life, I think, is the things one remembers.
                                                                Writer Agatha Christie

Richard Nelson, the author of the book Flights of Angels was voted the Colorado Teacher of the Year in 1980. At East, he taught AP English, sponsored the Spotlight and coached the speech team.  His book published in 2005 by the Alumni and Friends of East High covers the years 1874-2004. Although he remarks in his prologue that other histories have been written, he compiled all the information plus conducted many interviews to provide a comprehensive history of the school. Because of his belief that history is made of relationships, he includes names of administrators, teachers, class officers, publication editors, sponsors, award winners, clubs and top athletes.

The book is divided by decades using a short history of the times to set the stage.  Since schools can not exist in isolation, the impact of events during those times and how each generation responds is germane to its history. In the twenties, the power of the Klan dominated policy making.  In the 30's, the depression, the 40's the war, the 50's were "chilled by the cold war and heated by rock 'n' roll" and the 60's by Vietnam, civil rights and the counterculture.

Since our class represented the end of the 50's and the first year of the 60's, we fell within the time dubbed as "The Golden Years" at East.  "These would be the last years of innocence for a school that would be changing as rapidly as society itself", says Nelson.  Most families had two parents at home, life was structured, drinking may have been present, but drugs were not.  The boys actually brought the girls home at the designated hour! Popular places like the Chat-n-Chew, the Oasis Drive-In, and Bonsibs were hangouts.  Mostly they were used for girl (or boy) watching or publicly showing off your "steady".  By the late 60's into the 70's, the students at East would grow to defy many of the rules we followed.

Our class was much like the 50's when selection and participation in such things as publishing the Angelus and the Spotlight were an honor.  By 1959, both publications were scorned and
struggled.  It was a decade of significant changes and events - a young President elected then assassinated, the Civil Rights movement, space explorations, the Vietnam War, the Cuban missile crisis, the Berlin Wall, etc.  The world and the students at East followed suit in the unrest. It would not be until the 80's before many activities of which we were familiar were revitalized with a new energy and supportive student body bringing  the old school back into academic and athletic prominence where it remains today.

 50th Reunion Celebration

             May 3,2010 - Issue 5

Dear Richard,

Good News!

The invitations are at the printer and should be in your mailbox next week. Kudos to Natalie Zerobnick Mozer, Chairman of this committee who has masterminded this communication. A reply form and envelope are included, so let us know your intentions. If you have already sent in your money, thank you and those who have made contributions, a double thank you!

This is the fifth newsletter regarding the planning and excitement of the 50 year reunion of East High Class of 1960. Welcome to our most recently "found" classmates who have been added to the data base. Names, addresses and email information continue to come in and if you are receiving this for the first time, please know the prior newsletters have been posted on the website.  Be sure and go to our website  www.EastHigh60.com  on a regular basis to see the latest in the planning.

Richard Smith, Website Commander has added a new list, under the Events tab, of names of those who have sent in their reservations. Also, on the website is information for all of our  events-the Friday evening's party "Yakety Yak" which is going to be vigorous and fun, Saturday's tour of East "Rock around the Clock" with lunch carts like Pasquali's and Saturday evening's "Let the Good Times Roll" special dinner/evening which will wrap up the reunion.  Also on the website, there is information regarding Missing Angels, Memorial, Reunion links, Reunion Committee members, and photos. These images remind us that age doesn't matter unless you're a cheese!

We do have some dates to keep in mind.  Information and photo for the Memories Book is due July 1st.  Cynthia Riebeth has agreed to Co-Chair with Iretta the production of this hardbound "Memories" book.  The July 1st date is the cut off in order to get the book published by the reunion.  August 15th is the deadline for reservations, although we  would hope, encourage, want and suggest that you get your reservation in earlier.  Thank You.

The committee for the 50th continues to be very excited, because daily we find or hear from more people who say they plan to attend. Don't be home wondering what you are missing next September.........plan to be in Denver at the reunion!  It is without a doubt the chance of a life time.

 Denver Attractions

If you are coming from out of town (or have guests staying with you), there are many options to consider that might make your trip more enjoyable.  On Sunday afternoon, the infamous Denver Broncos play Indianapolis and the "possible" World Series... Colorado Rockies are at bat with San Francisco! The fabulous King Tut exhibit (which started in Atlanta in 2009) will be at the Museum of Nature and Science. (That is the former Natural History Museum in City Park.) The exhibit includes over 50 objects from the Egyptian King's tomb.

The Botanical Gardens (close to East High) should be ablaze with color. Hop the 16th Street Mall bus or walk and shop in Lodo (lower downtown Denver).

All of these things plus many more options make Denver what it is today. Toby Grossman Beamguard has put together the best websites to view and says she might be able to entice her son, Brandon Shaffer, the current Colorado Senate President, into a personal tour of Denver's State Capitol. Do check out the following websites: www.visitDenver.com and www.Denver365.com   and make your plans today. We will be providing more as we get closer to the reunion!
"Memories" Book

Your information for the "Memories" Book is requested as soon as possible. Highlights of your life in around 150 words or less (we will edit if you get too wordy) are desired. We want every classmate whether you plan to attend or purchase the book to contribute. Additionally, a current photo (just you, not the family please) is requested and if you can submit it digitally, all the better. The magic of computers makes it easier to size.  If you are digitally challenged (and you are not alone), you may submit a photo and information in the reply envelope enclosed in the invitation.  Are you wondering what to say?  Significant moments such as where you went to school, places you've lived, work, family etc. might be included. The book will cost $30.00 for those who wish to purchase it and receive it at the reunion. An additional $7.00 is needed for shipping if it is sent to you. You do not have to purchase a book to submit your information.  Remember July 1st is the due date. Also, make sure you include your first, last and maiden names.  The book will include a high school photo and a recent photo (if submitted) along with your information.  Thanks!

Fifty years is a long time.  We lived when Elvis and Buddy Holly were cool.  Bill Haley and the Comets rocked.  Girls wore bobbi socks and skirts with lots of crinolines.  Hair was pulled back into a pony tail or was combed with great care.  The guys might wear their hair slicked back or have a crew cut.  Brylcream and cologne were staples.  The penny loafers had pennies in them as we weren't flush with money.  The Holiday Inn or Bonsib's Drive-In were the places to be with $.55 hamburgers, Cherry Cokes and French Fries.  A trip to the drugstore with a soda fountain meant chocolate sundaes with whipped cream and a cherry on top.  Drive-in movies were "in" but risky.  You might get kissed.  Going steady was special for you were going to love this person forever...well...usually not!  Hay rides, sleigh rides, potlucks, music......music....and music were important.  Then of course, we did study because there was college looming out there or a job of some kind.  We had fun, but we were accountable and had to be responsible.....most of the time.

The record highlighting many of the events during the 1959-1960 Senior Year has been found and Joan Harcourt McWilliams is working on making it available.  It truly is priceless as in Joan's words, "No wonder we turned out all right. Just listen to the recording and you will see  what messages we were given."

Efforts such as this are combining to make this a very special reunion.  Fifty years may have passed and classmates have scattered all over Denver, the United States and abroad.  Still, it doesn't matter. Within every 70 year old is a 35 year old wondering what happend ....for we have lived through some incredible times and amazing developments. Still the roots of our upbringing has kept us real. Come celebrate in September!

Dear Marty,

Happy Spring 2010!

Greetings from sunny/snowy Colorado. Colorado is in the height of its glory -  65 degrees one day and a foot of snow the next.  Skiing is fabulous... golfing is possible and next September for the reunion, the fall colors will be outstanding. Friday, September 24th and Saturday, the 25th are not to be missed.   It is shaping up to be a great weekend for all those who live here and those coming from afar.

This is the fourth newsletter regarding the planning and excitement of the 50 year reunion of East High Class of 1960. New names, addresses and email information are being added daily and if you missed a prior newsletter, they are posted at www.EastHigh60.com  The website is being updated on a regular basis and information is available there on the Reunion Events, Missing Angels, Memorial, Reunion links, Committee, Photos, Newsletters etc.

In the last newsletter, our Treasurer, Iretta Jackson Bell updated you on the financial arrangements.  What an incredible response!  We received contributions and we thank you! Please know that every dollar we receive will be used wisely.

In our efforts so far, many people have remarked that they plan to come and we are starting to get reservations. Exciting!  Soon, we will be listing who is coming on the website. If you care to respond now, the form is below for those who wish to copy, complete and return. Also, the official invitation will go out around the first of May.  Please know either way of responding works!

Today, we are asking your input once again and that is regarding the Memory Book or shall we say the 50th Reunion Book of East High's (Outstanding) Class of 1960.  We will be distributing it at the reunion.

Keep the questions and comments coming and thank you for your interest. We look forward to welcoming you next September!

                                                               Your Reunion Committee

Memory Book

The information for the book is now being requested from everyone in the class whether you can be here or not!  Please send a current picture and a bio.  The bio's should be around 150 words and the pictures - ideally about 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 which is a little smaller than a passport picture. Digital photos can be resized if necessary. Your information such as where you went to school, places you've lived, work, family etc. might be included. Please be informative, but succinct.  It is your call as to how you wish to highlight the last fifty years, but we reserve the right to edit the length if necessary. Remember we can only picture you in the book. Family pictures are perfect to bring to the reunion. The price of the book will be somewhere between $25 and $30 depending on its length, but of course, it will be priceless!

Please make sure to include first, last and maiden names.  We will be pairing everyone up with a picture from the Angelus. Many thanks!

Information Packet - Out of Town

An information packet for those coming from out of town is being researched and compiled at this time. It will have suggested accommodations where we have negotiated a special rate, a list of events that are going on around Denver at the time of our reunion, popular restaurants etc. We will have this available to download online, and update it as much as possible as the year goes on. Hopefully, this will help you as you plan your trip to Denver.  Plans are to have this packet by the next newsletter and it will be posted on the website.

To Those of Us Born during the 40's

(with a little editing from a more expansive list)

We survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank while pregnant. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.  No one was able to reach us all day......and we were OKAY!  No Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes.  No video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's. We had friends and we went outside and found them.  We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt and the worms did not live in us forever.  We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.  The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.  They actually sided with the law! We were a generation of risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors. During the past 50+ years, there has been an explosion of innovations and new ideas.  We grew up in a great time.  How fortunate we were.  We have many reasons to celebrate.

Dear Richard,

Greetings to you! This is the third newsletter........with many more to come......regarding the planning and excitement of the 50 year reunion of East High Class of 1960. Daily, we add new names (and correct email information) so if you missed either one of the first two newsletters, they are posted on our website www.EastHigh60.com We thank everyone who is keeping in touch and helping us with the effort to reach as many classmates as possible.

The response to our efforts is heartwarming and today, our Treasurer, Iretta Jackson has penned a letter to advise you of the latest regarding the financial arrangements of the 50th.  Please know we are most mindful of costs and every effort is being made to plan a weekend worthy of your attendance. Information is being compiled and will be sent in the next newsletter regarding accommodations suggestions for those coming from out of town.

Keep the questions and comments coming.  We hear you and look forward to welcoming you next September!
                                                               Your Reunion Committee
Dear Classmates:

Things are really ratcheting up!  We have decided on the cost of our long awaited 50th reunion:

$30 for the Friday night musical gala

$10 for the Saturday gathering and tour of our beloved Alma-mater (tour is free, the $10 is for lunch which will be provided at special food stands.)

$70 for the Saturday night dinner and dance

All prices are per person.

***For $100, you can attend all 3 functions and save $10.***

We felt that we could make the price more reasonable if most attendees came for the whole shebang, thus the savings.

On Saturday night we are having an exceptional band that will play MELLOW music with some danceable pieces thrown in to enhance our trip down memory lane.

We have kept the cost to a bare minimum and so, as stated in our second newsletter, we are providing those who so desire, the opportunity to help make this an extra special night.

We appreciate those classmates who have already contacted us asking how they can help.  In response, we are welcoming any amount of contribution.  It doesn't take many smaller donations to make $100.  Donations will go to secure venues, pay required up-front costs, deposits, and mailings.  If anyone would like to specifically sponsor items like the band, decorations, or the invitations, simply specify your wish and we will work with you.

Hopefully, in these economic times, by keeping the weekend within reason and with some extra support, we will see some who previously thought they could not attend.  At the bottom of this newsletter is a form to print off.  Please specify which event you are attending (and contribution if you so choose), enclose your payment and send to:

  East High Class of '60

 1650 Fillmore St. Unit 1607

Denver, CO 80206

Please make checks out to; East High Class of '60

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEND A CONTRIBUTION TO ATTEND.

Plans are to send invitations to everyone in our database the first of May and you may simply respond at that time. Our goal is to see as many of our classmates as possible.

Thank you in advance for your bighearted generosity.

East High School

Project Angel Pride

is a non profit group founded in 2003 to plan and implement improvements to East High School's grounds. Currently, as a capital improvement project, they are working to upgrade the entrance to the building.  Interested donors can choose from a commemorative brick, paver or even cornerstone with a personal inscription. The cost is approximately $250,000. The hopes are to raise the money to complete the project this summer. Please visit the website Project Angel Pride for additional details.

One of the hopes and goals of the 50th reunion committee... beyond planning and executing a worthwhile and enjoyable weekend...is to make a lasting contribution to East in honor of our class.

Our plans as outlined before are still being developed, but here are plans to date:

Try to Remember

is our theme for the 50th graduation celebration! With the music of our era classic and memorable, we have zeroed in on melodies we recognize and are planning events to correspond.

Yakety, Yak....Friday night, September 24th, plans are coming together.  Helen Riley Duran and Mimi Rice Garrison are spearheading this evening.  It will be lively.  Holiday Inn in Cherry Creek!

Saturday noon, we will Rock Around the Clock.  Ted Simon and Alan Davis are co-chairing this activity with tours and thinking even some food wagons to relive days of old. Tamales anyone? Richard Nelson, author of Flights of Angels, a history of Denver East High from 1874 - 2004 is helping with the plans.

Saturday night, the theme Let the Good Times Roll is taking shape.  Joan Harcourt Williams, Sheila Nasbarg Rudofsky and Ann Sullivan Kennedy are working hard to make this a wonderful evening.  It will be a great way to end the celebration.

These plans are coming along.   More specifics including costs will be outlined soon. Plan to attend any or all of the events!

Dear  Richard

The Class of 1960 Responds!

The first newsletter regarding the 50th reunion was well received.  It may have been awhile since attending East, but the enthusiasm is not lacking and indication of interest gratifying. Without a doubt, this reunion will be special with activities of all varieties and people coming from all over the world!   In following issues, we will be more specific as details are lined up. Please know your committee is working extremely hard to do it well and for a reasonable price. Thank you especially for those who emailed information to add to our list of contacts.  It is an ongoing challenge to find as many people as possible and every bit of information helps.  Keep it up!

                                      Your Reunion Committee

P.S. If you receive this newsletter and would like it to be addressed by a different first name such as Dick instead of Richard, Robert instead of Bob, etc., please let us know.
Message from the Treasurer

Dear 1960 Angels,

The 50th reunion committee has been meeting since June and wants this celebration to be the best.  Due to the economic times, we are working hard to have events that everyone can attend and cost is one of our biggest concerns.  Our Friday evening will be an inexpensive gathering that will be casual with light hors d'oeuvres. The Saturday tour at the school will be fun with some food options being explored now.  Saturday evening will be more comprehensive with dinner - a nice buffet and music to end the celebration in a very special way.

Currently, our primary concern is contacting graduates and getting information out.   The committee can plan the greatest 50th in history, but those who don't know about it will be left out.   The more people contacted, the better the attendance. Due to cost and time consumed by mailing, we will be using email as much as possible.  This is everyone's chance to participate in making our 50th the best reunion ever.

Because cost is a great concern, we are asking for everyone who is able to help.  If you feel you can help sponsor part of the event either with monetary contributions or special needed talents (printing, computer, marketing) please contact us.  For example, Sheila and Gerard Rudofsky have offered to donate the dessert for Saturday evening.  Monetary contributions will be used for advance cost and then used to reduce the expense for everyone.  We want this to be an event everyone can attend.   Come and revisit the past, rekindle old friendships and reconnect with those who helped to shape your high school experience. Thank you!

Contributions may be made to the East High Class of 1960, and mailed to:

East High Class of 1960
Attn: Iretta Bell
1650 Fillmore St. #1607
Denver, CO 80206

(Contact Iretta at irettabell@msn.com if needed)

P.S. YOU DO NOT NEED TO JOIN CLASSMATES.COM TO COMMUNICATE WITH US!!!!  Go to our web site Easthigh60.com and information is available. All of these efforts - the website, newsletter etc. are being done with great care regarding cost. Volunteer men/women power. A memory book will be compiled (being researched now) and we want everyone to part of it even if you can't attend.
Photographer Named

Judy Judd Soden has agreed to be our "official" photographer for the 50th.  She provided such excellent  pictures from the 45th reunion that the committee asked if she would capture the images of the 50th. We are happy to announce she has agreed to help. As a member of the Professional Photographers of California, Judy has made a name for herself and we will benefit from her talents. Thank you, Judy!
45th Reunion DVD

In the January issue of the newsletter, we mentioned the work that Forrest Luff has done over the years to work on the reunion planning. His enthusiasm was so contagious that losing him in December was not only personal, but unfortunate in so many ways.

A good example of his efforts is the DVD he created after the 45th reunion.  He offered it as a way to raise money for the 50th.  Last July, Forrest uploaded a "trailer" of his DVD...just snippets of the entire production...  which you can view by clicking on the following: 45th Reunion - East High Class of 1960.  If you would like the entire DVD, please send a check made out to East High Class of 1960 for $15 to Sandy Vines, 6745 Southridge Lane, Littleton, CO 80120. She will send you a copy. This amount will cover the DVD, shipping costs and any extra will go into the reunion fund. Thank You.

The 2009 EH Constitutional Scholars win National Competition - #1 in the Nation for THIRD straight year...

In Washington, D.C. last May, East became the only team in the 22 year history of the competition to accomplish the three peat. East has represented the Denver Public Schools and the State of Colorado 20 times as the State Champions. Incredibly, in December, they won the state competition once again.  The 26 member team will leave for D. C. on April 22, 2010.  Go Angels!

Final Thoughts

Congratulations to classmate and 50th reunion committee member, Toby Grossman Beamgard. She was recently pictured in the Denver Post with her son, Brandon Shaffer who was selected the President of the Colorado Senate.  Speaking of legislators, former Head Boy, Jim Riesberg has continued his leadership ways and is in his second term as the State Representative of District 50 (Greeley area) in Colorado.  Don Ament, a former legislator, was the Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture in Colorado from 1999 to 2007.

Today, we continue our efforts to reach out to as many classmates as possible.  Odds are during the time this newsletter was written, one or more of you have changed your email address!  Please be sure and keep in touch.

The committee is working hard and we are hoping that you will plan to attend.  We also hope that you will help us in the endeavors in whatever way you can.  There are many links on this page to reach those people responsible in different areas.  With all of us working together, this will be the best reunion ever.

Try to Remember
East High School
Try to Remember is our theme for the 50th graduation celebration! The music of our era was classic and the best; thus, the committee decided to bring back a few titles from the oldies to refresh our memories.

Yakety, Yak....Friday night, September 24th, plans are to gather in casual attire for food and fun at the Holiday Inn in Cherry Creek.  Memories of the Holiday Drive In prevail, so we opted for the next best thing.  The hotel has a large ballroom, excellent parking, good food and plenty of room for us all.

Saturday noon, we will Rock Around the Clock for a return to the site of your high school career, to include munching a bit, perhaps some entertainment, and a tour of the school.  You won't want to miss visiting the clock tower where a new history museum has been created.

Saturday night, the theme Let the Good Times Roll will be our finale.  We've chosen Pinehurst Country Club because it will hold all of us in ONE room.  The class of 1959 used the venue this year and reported it worked well. Cocktails, dinner, music ...it will all be there.  A great way to end the celebration.

These plans are all being developed. More specifics including costs will be defined in coming months. Plan to attend any or all of the events!

Dear  Richard

Happy New Year - 2010!  My, oh my, how the years have flown by ... treating some more kindly than others, but hey, if you are getting this newsletter, you are one of the lucky ones!  50 years is a long time, and is most worthy of a special celebration. In fact, that is what is being planned.  Mark your calendars now for this fall.... Friday, September 24 and Saturday, September 25th as we gather in Denver.  It is the place to be!

An enthusiastic committee has been hard at work for nearly six months now and this newsletter has been created to keep you informed of the activities leading up to and the reunion itself.  We will need your help though to pull off this grand affair.  A great turnout will not only make the committee feel like all this time is worthwhile, but a guarantee you will see some of the people you want to see.

Please know that each member of the best and largest class East High School had is welcomed... and we want to make this event worthy of your attendance. During the weekend, there are different activities planned and a Memory Book will be distributed. Welcome to 2010! Welcome to this newsletter! Welcome to your 50th!

Finding Classmates

What a job to find our classmates! Sandy Vines is heading up this mamouth undertaking.  Chairman Sheila Rudofsky is working closely with a member of the Class of 1956, Jack Sheff and those at East to find names of classmates.  Our entire committee has been calling and emailing.... and confirming names, and the address, emails, etc.  It has been extremely time consuming, but worth it when we find someone! YOU are receiving this newsletter, because you have been found!  (Suggestion:  add mjcseg@aol.com to your address book.) If you will go to the website... EastHigh60.com and check the "Missing" list and can help us with any information, please contact Sandy.
Forrest Luff's bottle
Forrest Luff

Many of you will remember Forrest Luff who lost his lower leg to cancer in high school.  He embraced life with gusto, but died in December of a heart attack.  At the 45th reunion, he presented a bottle of Cognac with the warm wishes that it was to be saved for the last member of the Class.  In his spirit, we celebrate the ever lasting enthusiastic by which he embraced life.  May we ever so mindful of each precious day.

Final Thoughts

Why go to a reunion?  Perhaps high school wasn't your favorite time, but maybe it was too.  Our class grew up when Denver had only four high schools. You may have ridden the bus downtown to go to the dentist or to see a movie in one of the sixteen theatres. Now only the Paramount is left standing.  After high school, our class scattered to all ends of the earth and when we "find" someone, who knows where it might be?  Perhaps in the United States, but abroad too.  Sometimes we learn that a person has died and that makes us sad.  High school was a time of mystery and discovery.  Let's celebrate it for
the experience, the relationships and the memories that remain with us yet today.

It's not so much what is poured into the student, but what is planted, that really counts.
Iretta Jackson Bell, Chairman of the 45th reunion and this year's Treasurer is handling all the finances for the reunion. You will be hearing from her soon as we will need your support not only to attend but in the grand scale, we hope to assist those who may need help coming to the reunion. In addition, a goal is to give a gift to East in behalf of the Class of 1960. We hope you will receive her letter with enthusiasm!
